Our church choir would like new members. We are a thriving choir, ranging in age from 10 to 80! At present we have 11 juniors and 19 adults. Ideally we would like 6 more youngsters, 2 sopranos, 3 altos, 1 tenor and 2 basses.
The Choir offers free musical training, the enjoyment of music-making with others, Christian training and character-building, the development of alertness and self-confidence, the opportunity to make good friends and a little extra pocket money, and the opportunity of attending singing-days and 3-day courses run by the Royal School of Church Music at Buckfast Abbey and at Exeter Cathedral.
The capital equipment of the choir is extremely good. The Church has a very fine 3-manual Nicholson organ, installed in 2009 (see Church Appeal page for more information). We have an excellent grand piano in the church and a very good practice room with piano. There are full choir robes, and we have one of the largest parish choir music libraries in the country.
Our choirmaster, Tony Yates, has been a member of the BBC Northern Singers and of Canterbury and Chichester Cathedral Choirs, a visiting teacher of singing at Dartington College of Arts. He has been organist & choirmaster at St Margaret’s since 1973. He is assistant conductor of the Exeter Philharmonic Choir and is the director of “Exeter Singers”. The assistant organist, Matthew Wright, is a lecturer in Classics at Exeter University and has recently gained 2 diplomas in piano performance.
The Choir sings a very large repertoire of church music, ranging from medieval plainsong through Byrd and Palestrina to modern pieces by Benjamin Britten, Herbert Howells and John Rutter. From time to time we are invited to sing Evensong at Exeter Cathedral.
Parents and children, please come and see if our choir and church is for you: friendly reception guaranteed! We rehearse in the Church Room on Fridays from 7 to 8-15 p.m., and before the service on Sundays from 9-30 a.m.
